Men's magazine apologises for offensive article on talking about sports with women

Facepalm.

YESTERDAY, MEN’S HEALTH published an article entitled How to Talk about Sports with Women.

The article’s subheading read, “The things that interest you are unlikely to interest her, but you can still make a connection.”

The piece – which, it should be noted, was written by a woman – then went on to state that “most women don’t care about stats” and suggested that fellas use “story lines” to engage women while watching sports.

While you’re enthusing about Dominic Moore’s scoring record, she’d rather hear about how he supported his wife’s battle with cancer – and even took a season off from the NHL at the height of his career. Treat your heroes as people and not just players on a field, and you’ll suck her in.

Oof.

Needless to say, the notion that the only way to get women interested in sports is to tell them stories about how nice the athletes are to their spouses didn’t sit well with a lot of people.

As writer Roxane Gay noted, it’s actually surprisingly simple to explain sports to women.

Amid the uproar, Men’s Health swiftly deleted the article and issued this apology.
